Everyone Has an Opinion. Few Have Evidence.

April 16th, 2026Branding, Business, Leadership

I was told something early in my career that has stuck with me.

If you walk into a CEO’s office armed with nothing but an opinion, you can safely assume whose opinion you’ll leave with.

Theirs.

They sign the cheques.

But if you walk in with an opinion supported by data, you may not win the argument, but you’ll be heard. And more importantly, you’ll have a chance to change the outcome.

The Most Dangerous Place for Opinions? Marketing.

There is no function in business more vulnerable to opinion than marketing.

Everyone has one.

The CEO.
The CFO.
The Head of Sales.
Your partner at home.
The bloke next door.

And where do these opinions come from?

  • “I saw an ad the other night…”
  • “My daughter uses TikTok, we should be on that…”
  • “I don’t like the look of the website…”
  • “Our competitor is everywhere at the moment…”

None of it is malicious.
But almost all of it is anecdotal.

And anecdotal thinking leads to reactive decision-making.

Which leads to wasted spend.

Which leads to the quiet, creeping belief that “marketing doesn’t really work.”

The Real Problem Isn’t Marketing. It’s the Lack of Evidence.

When something isn’t working, the default response in most organisations is to guess.

  • Change the campaign
  • Change the agency
  • Change the message
  • Change the platform

All driven by instinct.

Very little driven by evidence.

Because here’s the uncomfortable truth:

Most businesses don’t actually know how visible they are in the market.

Not really.

This Is Where the KVI Changes the Game

The Kommunal Visibility Index (KVI) exists for one reason:

To replace opinion with evidence.

Instead of asking “what do we think is wrong?”
It answers “what is actually happening?”

  • Where are you being seen—and where are you invisible?
  • How does your visibility compare to competitors?
  • What signals are you sending into the market—and how are they being interpreted?
  • Where are the structural weaknesses holding you back?

And most importantly:

What do you need to do next?

Not guesswork.
A roadmap.

From Anecdote to Advantage

When you put evidence on the table, something shifts.

The conversation changes from:

“I think we should…”

to:

“The data is telling us…”

That’s a completely different room.

It moves marketing from a subjective debate…
to a strategic business discussion.

From cost… to asset.

From noise… to advantage.

Because in the End…

Opinions are easy. Everyone has one.

But in a world where visibility is fragmented, algorithm-driven, and increasingly shaped by AI…

The organisations that win won’t be the ones with the strongest opinions.

They’ll be the ones with the clearest evidence—and the discipline to act on it.

If you’re still making marketing decisions based on opinion, you’re not alone.

But you are exposed.
